How to Make Your GMod Server Private with a Password

Make a Garry’s Mod server private with sv_password, save it in server.cfg and test joining. Remove the password when you are ready to reopen.

sv_password sets the password players need to join. It is separate from the panel login and RCON password.

Set the password

  1. Open garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg. Create server.cfg in that folder if it is missing.
  2. Add sv_password "YOUR_JOIN_PASSWORD", replacing the example password. If the line already exists, edit it.
  3. Save the file and restart the server.
Use New file if server.cfg is missing from garrysmod/cfg.

Test it

Reconnect and check that the correct password works and an incorrect one is rejected. If not, check the configuration and addons that change join checks.

Remove the password

Set sv_password "" in server.cfg, save and restart. Check that you can join without a password.

For panel access, see inviting a subuser. For general editing, see editing server files. View Garry’s Mod server hosting.
