How to Change Gamemodes on a Garry’s Mod Server

Install a Garry’s Mod gamemode, set its internal name in Startup and choose a compatible map. Check missing files and startup errors.

Use the gamemode’s internal folder name, rather than its Workshop title. Check its author’s instructions and required addons.

Install the gamemode

  1. For a Workshop gamemode, add it and its required items to your server’s collection.
  2. For a manual install, upload its folder to garrysmod/gamemodes. Avoid nesting an extra copy of the folder.
  3. Find the internal name in the folder or the author’s instructions. Choose a map that supports it.
  4. If you are replacing a gamemode that stores player progress, back up its data first.
Use Upload for manual gamemode files. Larger uploads can use SFTP.

Set the gamemode

In Startup, set Gamemode to its internal name, such as sandbox. Set Map to the map filename without .bsp. Restart, check Console and join.

The Gamemode and Map fields control what loads when the server starts. If a field is locked or missing, contact Konnect support.

If the wrong mode loads

Check the internal name, dependencies and Console errors. Return to the previous gamemode and map while fixing the install if needed.
