A custom domain lets players join with an address such as play.example.com. You need a domain you control and access to its DNS settings. This guide is for Minecraft Java Edition.
Find your Konnect server address
Open Network in the Konnect game panel and copy your server’s assigned game IP and port. Use the game connection address, not the SFTP, query or voice chat port. Confirm that the original address works before changing DNS.
Create an A record
- Open your domain’s DNS settings and add an A record.
- Set the hostname to play.example.com. In a Name field that already adds example.com, enter just play.
- Set the value to your Konnect server’s assigned IPv4 address without the port. Leave TTL at its default value and save.
With Cloudflare DNS, set this record to DNS only. Its normal orange-cloud proxy handles web traffic, not a Minecraft game connection. See Cloudflare’s proxy limitations.
Use an SRV record for a custom port
If your assigned game port is not 25565, add an SRV record so players can type just the domain. For an address of play.example.com, enter these values:
- Create an SRV record named _minecraft._tcp.play.example.com. In a Name field that already adds example.com, enter _minecraft._tcp.play. For separate fields, use service _minecraft, protocol _tcp and name play.
- Set priority to 0 and weight to 0.
- Set port to your Konnect server’s assigned game port. Set target to play.example.com without a port or https://. Save the record.
The target must resolve to your server through the A record. The SRV record reference explains these DNS fields.
Test the address
Open Multiplayer in Minecraft Java, choose Add Server and enter play.example.com. DNS changes can take time to reach every player. If it fails, test play.example.com:YourPort and the original IP:port. A working domain with an explicit port usually points to an SRV name, target or port mistake.
A domain does not change the assigned server port or install server software. Bedrock clients use a separate port field, so do not use this Java SRV setup as a Bedrock guide.
