Operator access, usually called OP, lets a player use Minecraft admin commands in game. It is separate from access to the Konnect game panel. Give it only to people you trust.
Give a player OP
- Start your Minecraft Java server and open Console.
- Enter op PlayerName, replacing PlayerName with the player’s current Java username. Do not use a Microsoft email or a leading slash.
- Check the Console confirmation. Have the player join and test an admin command, such as /time query daytime. This checks the time without changing the world.
Remove operator access
Enter deop PlayerName in Console. The player keeps normal server access, but loses permissions provided by OP.
If a command is still denied
Check the username and Console response. The op-permission-level setting controls vanilla operator permissions. Plugins can use their own permission rules. Check that plugin’s guide rather than giving every player OP.
Use commands to manage operators instead of editing ops.json directly. The Paper operator reference explains this file.
