How to Whitelist Players on a Minecraft Server

Make your Minecraft Java server private with a whitelist. Add and remove players in Console, check the list and fix common joining problems.

A whitelist limits your Minecraft Java server to approved accounts. You can change it in Console while the server is running.

Add players and enable it

  1. Enter whitelist add PlayerName for your own Java username, then repeat for each approved player. Do not use a slash in panel Console.
  2. Enter whitelist on to enable it.
  3. Enter whitelist list to check the names, then have an approved player reconnect.

Remove a player or turn it off

Use whitelist remove PlayerName to remove someone, or whitelist off to reopen joining. An already connected player may stay online until kicked. Operators can bypass the whitelist, so use a non-operator account to test blocked access.

If someone cannot join

Use their current Java username, not a Microsoft email or Xbox display name. Check its spelling and the server address. Keep the Console error if the account cannot be found.

The Paper whitelist reference explains the saved account list. The enforce-whitelist property controls additional checks when changes are reloaded.
