ViaVersion lets supported newer Minecraft Java clients join an older server. The server keeps its original blocks and game mechanics. It does not add features from the player’s newer version.
Check what you need
This guide covers a standalone Paper or Spigot server. Open the official ViaVersion setup tool, select your server version and the client versions you want to allow. It will show which plugins you need.
ViaVersion handles newer clients joining older servers. Supporting older clients on a newer server can also need ViaBackwards. Very old clients can need ViaRewind. Install only the combination shown for your versions.
Check the current Java requirements too. A plugin can need newer Java than the base server.
Install and test
- Download a stable ViaVersion JAR from its official project page. Download any required companion plugins identified by the setup tool.
- Stop your Minecraft server. Open plugins in Files and upload the JARs. Remove old copies when updating.
- Start the server and check Console for plugin loading errors. Use a full restart instead of reload.
- Enter viaversion in Console without a slash to confirm it loaded. Join using one of the supported newer client versions.
- Enter viaversion list to check the connected players and their client versions.
See the project’s installation and command guide for download links and troubleshooting.
If players still see Outdated Server
Check that ViaVersion loaded, the player’s version is supported by the installed release and they are connecting to the right address. A new Minecraft release can need a ViaVersion update before it works. Test with the server’s own client version to separate a basic connection problem from a compatibility issue.
If you use Velocity or another proxy, follow the project’s proxy instructions. Install ViaVersion on the proxy or the backend servers as recommended for your setup, rather than both.
