How to Enable Valheim Crossplay for Steam and Xbox Players

Turn on crossplay so friends on Steam, Xbox and the Microsoft Store can join the same Valheim world.

Valheim crossplay lets Steam, Xbox and Microsoft Store players join the same server. Without crossplay, the server uses the Steam backend and only Steam players can join.

Turn on crossplay

  1. Open your Valheim server and select Startup.
  2. Set Enable Crossplay to 1. This adds -crossplay to the startup command.
  3. Leave World Name, the password and assigned ports unchanged.
  4. Restart the server and check Console while it connects to the game backend. If the setting is locked or missing, contact support.

Share a join code

  1. Join the server and open the game’s pause menu.
  2. Copy the current join code and send it to your friends.
  3. They can open Join Game, choose Add Server and paste the code. Enter the server password when asked.
  4. Xbox players should check that crossplay is enabled in their client. If the option is missing, check the account’s parental controls.

Crossplay also supports the assigned public IP and port or the server list. It does not support a private LAN or loopback address. Hiding the server from the public browser is a separate setting.

If someone cannot join

Check that the server and clients use compatible game versions, crossplay is still enabled and the code is current. For a modded server, check whether the mods support every player’s platform.
